IP tells you where the request comes from, that’s it. It doesn’t tell you what language the user speaks. It looks like Google thinks otherwise, and many programmers are blindly repeating it for Google with no idea how do it properly.
it’s usually higher up non-technical people making that decision. you are preaching to the choir.

I can’t understand why many sites (even google) still uses IP to determine language. My browser explicitly tells what language i prefer.
Fucking hate youtube for this. Video titles are translated, but not always for some reason, and every other video has annoying “AI” audio translation or subtitles are active. They also don’t seem to think that users can speak more than one language, horrible user experience.
If only there is a well supported property that could be fetched to know the user’s language…
