This is a wide spread phenomenon on the platform. Sometimes its just a few comments or even dozens of comments in response to an original comment on a post being grouped together in another button saying (x number of replies) but when you open those replies its either nothing, or significantly less replies than the prompt described. Its mostly all on posts that are political in nature relating to the current fascist takeover in the USA, Luigi Magnione, amazon union busting, anti laborer’s rights legislation, loosening of child labor laws and other topics related to the wider topics regarding disappearing human rights under emboldening fascist authoritarianism. many of us have seen the news articles that mention allegations of reddit censoring comments and giving people violations for liking certain content but nothing is being said about the actual extent of this censorship. But when you can see hundreds of comments being deleted from a post such as this one here, it doesn’t bode well for the future
Where are the Luigi hot takes on Lemmy? My feeds in Lemmy and other are depressingly sparse on Luigi content.
I get one YT channel pushed to me claiming Luigi has good odds of a mistrial because of how the cops detained him. Lol, not likely but I applaud the tireless optimism it takes to think that.
I commented a lot in political debate subs before I left, and one thing that I noticed is that Reddit would refuse to accept (error out) or act like it accepted and then just outright delete my comments. I don’t have hard data, but one pattern I really noticed is that any comment that included both ‘Israel’ and ‘genocide’ got errored/eaten a very high percentage of the time.

– and onto increasing centralizing instances where they duplicate reddit’s behavior.

But Reddit sent a mass message to moderators telling them how they were expected to moderate any content praising the extra judicial murder of brian Thompson or calling for more political violence against the bourgeoisie…… and now reddit is sending people the same automated response about how liking banned content is against their policy and can lead tk further punitive action against ones account. Basically threatening moderators with banning of the communities they moderate if they did not follow their censorship memorandum.
Even before this last summer my account was permanently IP banned for a comment on a post about israel/palestine that essentially said international law states an occupied indigenous population has the right to defend itself by any means necessary including violent resistance. And i was definitely not the first to experience such censorship.

It’s a frog/boiling water situation. It never gets suddenly, dramatically worse, it just gets slowly worse over time. I had been noticing some weirdness (described in another comment under this post) for a while and was kinda starting to wonder what was up, but it didn’t rise to the level of ‘Oh I should do something like this’ until I got temp-banned for saying Luigi didn’t deserve to go to jail for what he did (which was then reversed on appeal, but not before I got a message saying I was perma-banned for ban-evasion with other accounts (I’ve had only one account in the 14 years I was on reddit, so that was bullshit), but the ban was lifted instead. It was that combination of an increasing sense that something fucky was going on and an inciting event that made me realize it was considerably worse than I realized. People tend to need an inciting event, otherwise the concern doesn’t overcome the inertia to keep doing what you’re familiar with.
i guess my side of the boiling pot got too hot faster than the rest did and my event was the reddit blackout protest; all of the subreddits i frequented when dark and it forced me onto lemmy.
Yeah, I almost left at that time too, but I didn’t believe the alternatives were really up to snuff. I have been pleasantly surprised to be wrong.
i’m thankful for it; my leftists leaning were already unwelcomed on reddit as much as they are on .world and that episode taught me that the alternatives were significantly better; i would still be on reddit if it weren’t for that and it’s so much better having islands of sanity whose members can see the neoliberal wool being pulled over american’s eyes.
Really? I found lots of pretty far-left subs that were pretty friendly to those ideas. Wish I could find more here, honestly, but the ones I’ve seen seem kinda dead.
those subreddits exist and i was part of them (they were the ones who told me about lemmy) and, yes, they’re dead and/or dying because the constant and overwhelming stream of clueless “gotchas” from people unaware of their propagandization is depressing and tiring AF and that made most/all of the leftists redditors leave for islands of sanity, like lemmy.
i’m only partially grateful that reddit’s enshitification pushed people here since they’re perpetuating the same asshattery that’s made reddit and this country turn into shit.
I just peruse to see the news but i was ip banned for posting comments critical of israel and supportive of Palestinian resistance about a year ago. Hopefully lemmy gets to s point where reddit becomes irrelevant but it is still in its infancy at the moment.
I don’t think it’s corporate Reddit. I think it’s mostly moderators co-opting the space and wanting to shape the narrative. As you said, almost all of the distortion has to do with either some corporate interest or some political interest. Wonder why. Anyway, Lemmy’s equally susceptible to it, because it uses the same model. Being a moderator is a thankless and time-consuming job and there’s always a shortage of them, so stepping up to become a mod is pretty much always an option if you are motivated to put some time into it so you can start to shape the discourse within a subreddit or a community.
That stuff is already here on Lemmy at a pretty large scale, it just hasn’t progressed to the late-stage shamelessness that it has on Reddit. On Reddit they don’t even bother to pretend it’s not what they’re doing.
