The wonderful @[email protected] has developed a script to help deal with DM spam.

With this script, when a user is permabanned, DMs sent from the account in the previous 24 hours will automatically be marked as deleted.

We have set the time to 24 hours to ensure that the majority of pre-existing (non spam) DMs are preserved in the event of an account being banned. That being said, if you lose a DM to this script that you need recovered, please reach out to myself or Kaity, and we can restore it manually for you!

Phew. I’ve felt dreadful looking into my inbox lately, because I really don’t want to see the gore image.

I wonder if we could get an option in account settings to restrict who can DM you. Like the options could be everyone, nobody, and a setting where someone can send you a request but not any images unless you accept the request. I think that this would be a good feature if this kind of spam gets more common, and prevent things like unsolicted nudes or gore.

Understood, but at the moment, you can’t even do that because you can’t delete DMs through the user interface or set controls on who can send you DMs. Until we get options in lemmy that let people take control of their own approach to spam DMs, this is the best we can do, because unfortunately, “do nothing” just means spam impacts everyone, and given the nature of some of that spam, that’s not an option.

Edit - I just noticed you’re not a blahaj lemmy user, so this won’t impact you in any way. It’s specific to users of this instance
