My first memory of a “global event” was 9/11. Then the Patriot Act and the Iraq/Afghanistan war. Then Citizens United and single-payer ObamaCare got shutdown and I gave up on the US, put my head down and got to work on an engineering degree so I could emigrate.
Thankfully, despite failing out and putting a total of 10 years into my 4 year degree, I graduated 2 years ago and am in a reasonable position to make that move. Leaving family and friends behind fucking sucks, but I can always come back when things simmer down, or at least provide a place to go if things don’t.
Feels like the old Russian mantra applies to us more and more these days. “And then things got worse.”
No. This is very much not normal.
Normal is trying to be good and often doing it. Not . . . whatever this is.
