By technical I’m referring mainly to ActivityPub/federation as well as the ability to host your own instances and related details.
Much less bots and reposts. I feel like there’s less content, but it’s more real than I what I experienced on Reddit for example
I switched over when I saw Zuckerberg and company at Trump’s inauguration. I’m Canadian and had been mostly trying to ignore the shitshow going on next door. I didn’t know they were all supporters. No fucking way do i want anything to do with anything those fucks are offering. So the fact that I can still enjoy content and be connected to the world without making them more money is very appealing to me.
It took about a week to get through Facebook withdrawals because of the friends and family I had on there but it feels so good now without all the ads and bots. I made a last post before I checked out, explaining why I was going and inviting everyone to do the same.
Artists (Capital ART) are on the fediverse. Things and art I have never seen before.
There are makers that are truly doing things that are super awesome. Building machines/automation that are helping out their lives. You can find these things on the open web as well, but not as “free” (IE locked behind some sort of wall).
It’s the most organic way of socializing
The fediverse is ran by volunteers. Engagement is organic and isn’t trying to sell you something. Everything you see is there because someone thought it was worth sharing
The community and thus the people.
i was going to say the better curation tools, but then i realized it’s definitely the clients for me, having the freedom to choose exactly how i want my experience to be is so amazing, and clients like photon just trounce stuff like reddit’s ui.
I love the idea of online communities that are run by the people and not by massive tech corporations.
The idea that we had a free and open internet back in the day, only to surrender the entire thing to fascist corpo fuckwads like Musk and Zuckerberg, or hostile authoritarian government pawns like ByteDance, is a perfect example of the tragedy of the commons.
The Fediverse feels like our one and only chance to take the internet back on behalf of all people, all over the world.
