For a land the size of russia, 29 million seems really low.

Just for comparison, depending on the year Ohio has between 9-11 million people. Now look at Ohio’s size, and now look at russia. Granted I know ohios number is total population, and the 29 mil is just healthy men aged 20-50, but still. Most people from europe don’t comprehend the size of the usa. They think they’ll land at disney in orlando, and then just drive to NYC is a couple hours. By that same token most americans don’t comprehend the size of russia. It has something like 14 timezones. USA has 4, but you gotta remember one of those is just Hawaii. Now imagine 14. And you’re telling me they only have 29 mil army ready men? Really feel like based on country size I would have expected 200mil. India is like the size of texas (which to be fair is huge on its own), but they have 2 BILLION people. There is no such thing as privacy there. Everybody watches you poop.

Here is a map showing where the majority of Russia’s population lives:

      https://maps-russia.com/maps-russia-geography/russia-population-density-map

The largest part of Russia is the vast Siberia, which is basically just endless forests, mountains and arctic tundra with few cities here and there - and the winters can be extreme. If not for the rich resources and the jobs that extraction of those resources creates, not many would choose to live there.

this map is also presupposing that Ukraine, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus, Georgia, Armenia, Azererbaijan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikstan, and Kyrgyzstan are all “In Russia”, which … is exactly the kind of puffed up blatantly self-aggrandizing dipshittery we all know to be a VERY russian-government-coded behavior.

I mean, I know Belarus is basically nothing but a puppet-state of Russia (which is exactly what they wanted Ukraine to become if Volodymyr Zelenskyy hadn’t won the election, displaced their useful idiot, and derailed their handover) and suspect that Georgia is generally more friendly to Russia than it is to Ukraine, but … fucking Armenia???
        Fucking … LITHUANIA?!

This map is suggesting that many of Russia’s densest population centers aren’t in Russia.

But it also firmly suggests Russia’s intentions to enslave all these areas.

Yeah, that map shows the borders of the Soviet Union. It was the first I could find in a hurry, It’s old but helped to prove my point that their landmass east of the Ural mountains is mostly wilderness. Here’s a more up-to-date version that tells the same story:
