It would be nice to have the extra support, I just don’t know if it’s worth the extra cost or not.

    Oh i didn’t catch the caveat that the host sets it up for you.

    I have not done that, but given the ease of setup, I don’t think it would be worth it. Unless they do the administration too which I doubt.

    The hard truth is, if you don’t have the skills to set up an instance, you probably don’t have the skills needed to adminstrate it.

      I have a couple. One of them will lose https about once a month, tgen a day or two later it will work again, sometimes after a apt update/upgrade.

      I think there’s a lot of people who want an instance but feel a little intimidated by the process.

        I would be curious, can you name one of these hosting services? I would like to see what they are offering.

        Yes, the concept of the fediverse is very appealing. Lemmy for instance definitely lowers the barrier to entry, but it is still an undertaking to manage an instance. Not everyone who wants to have an instance will have what they need to really do it, be it skills, money, time, dedication.
