In an upset similar to Canada’s recent election, Australia voted for the incumbent Labor party against the Trump-like right-winger who led the polls in the run-up to Election Day.

I don’t think that this is a fair assessment of what has happened in Australia.

The “Trump-like right-winger” is Peter Dutton and he was from the “Liberal” (our centre right) party. His party got slaughtered.

There’s a lot of commentary from his own party members. Pointing to “the trump effect” would be the easy way out, but none of them (not one that I’ve seen) have cited that as a reason for what happened. They’re saying that Dutton himself was not popular, and that they really didn’t have any policies to appeal to voters, and that their campaign was terribly managed, and that their voting base (boomers) are dying off. All of which is demonstrably true.

Trump didn’t help. Musk didn’t help. Dutton didn’t help with the Trump-like language. However, Labor won because Albo is a good PM and ran a great campaign. They would’ve won without the US shit show going on.
