spoiler alert: happiness doesn’t come from your relationship status.

lmao i understand the point you’re trying to make (“happiness is an equation largely derived from our social circle”; and, not coincidentally, women tend to have bigger ones) but, per the article:

It’s worth noting that consistent with past research, both men and women in relationships were happier than their single counterparts, on average.

again, i understand your point, they just literally contradicted it lmao

They should do this by socioeconomic breakdowns. I’m curious how the groups compare when controlling for that.

ETA: After reading the study, it’s worth noting that research is being conducted into depression and loneliness contributions (if any) to inceldom, but the “strongest” evidence is that inceldom causes depression and loneliness, but not necessary the other way around. Excluding that detail will only serve to further negatively stigmatize men that have depression issues regardless of the nature of that depression.

And there should be more acknowledgment to the fact that the effect sizes were closer to small than anything, and the R-squared were very small meaning that gender actually explained very little about the variations in satisfaction levels, meaning it’s explanatory power for their sample is limited and that the difference itself has a lot of room to be explained by other factors. So while gender did have a consistent effect on satisfaction levels, it was a small difference and it explained very little of the overall variation.

Please keep these kinds of considerations in mind when reading these papers.

Heterosexual men in particular tend to rely more exclusively on wives or girlfriends for emotional and social support, whereas women are more likely to have a proverbial village to turn to.

Fellas, is it gay to talk about feelings with your homies?

No, but as a heterosexual man I was brought up to not talk about feelings openly and made fun of for showing them. My family was pretty against that too, with jokes about the “limp wrists” etc. It’s hard to get over that.

Things are definitely getting better, none of my family would talk like that now, and my brothers relationships with their sons look a lot healthier and open, and now my brothers and I actually talk about feelings and mental health.

Hopefully things continue to get better too.
