President Trump is expected to sign a long-expected executive action Thursday calling on U.S. Education Secretary Linda McMahon “to take all necessary steps to facilitate the closure [of] the Department of Education and return education authority to the States,” according to a fact sheet provided by the White House. Trump plans to sign the order at a ceremony alongside the Republican governors of Texas, Indiana, Florida and Ohio.
There’s huge money in charter schools that cannot operate as profitably if there are federal regulations and requirements.
Yeah, this is just another step towards privatization of stuff that is socialized.
What they are doing with air traffic control and usps is the same.
It’s the department of your own country you dunce.
That’s the point. Educated voters don’t vote for Republicans.
This terrifies me. Not because we may have a generation of kids who don’t know fundamentals, but because we may have a generation of potential leaders who are not only competent but are religious ideologues. They will make decisions based on what their religions mandate and we will be worse for it.
Isn’t it concerning to you Americans that your country is legislated purely through Executive Orders? What’s the point in even having a congress at this point?
The growing power of the executive branch has been a concern since WWII or longer. Hopefully this administration will be a kick in the pants to rectify that problem.
Hugely concerning, and it’s worse than that because the other two branches of our government exist to stop this from happening but the appear to be totally OK with it.
It’s terrifying.
Yes
It’s really odd as an outsider. The American senate, congress, and courts are largely abdicating their power. Why would they do that? Power is everything to these people.
It’s also disappointing that the Democrats did sweet fuck all in their term to deal with the abuses that Trump did in his first term.
That part is so frustrating. The other branches are the “checks and balances” we’ve always been taught to trust in, but the Republicans have become a cult that’s infiltrated all of the branches, nullifying those checks and balances. It’s horrifying.
As an outsider from a country with a system entirely infiltrated by corrupt politicians and their interests, what seems even more concerning to me is the GOP’s push to replace all the people in the federal government with Trump loyalists. This looks like an active coup on your democracy.
I think we’re calling them Holy Republican Edicts now.
It is incredibly concerning. But it’s difficult to do much of anything. Protests often don’t reach a significant size, and when they do, they are not reported on. That leads to discouragement, the feeling that in wasting my limited time, risking my livelihood, and accomplishing nothing.
That’s one problem with being such a large nation.
More people are protesting now than in 2017, media is just declining to cover it properly. Every institution that holds power is helping the fascist be more of a fascist. Little short of assassination could stop whats currently happening.

Yes, it is!!!
Ah can’t wait to re-segregate the education system. I will have ridden the busses of desegregation, and my children shall ride them back to segregation! The south will rise again apparently.
Given that southern states love to put biblical commandments on their government buildings you can bet what kind of nonsense will get taught as ‘fact’ to large swaths of the country.
No need to bet, they already started.
The US is already pretty low on the list of countries with educated citizens. I guess they finally decided to cut their losses and reach for the bottom.
Given 1/3 of them voted for a man who paints himself orange and has the IQ of a tater-tot, it really shouldn’t take long.
I suspect that many states simply will sacrifice the education division within their budgets in order to pursue other “ventures”.
