Yeah, the court rushed their decision specifically because they expected Alito to drag his feet and stall as long as possible. So the SCOTUS 100% expected a massive surge of deportations over the weekend while Alito was stalling with writing his dissent.

In emergency orders, the justices don’t even need to say which way they voted. But Alito did anyways, specifically because he expected them to wait for his dissent before they announced the ruling. The fact that they didn’t wait (and Alito had to hurriedly shove the first draft of his dissent in) means that all seven justices who pushed it through were tired of putting up with his shit. That seems to be the lifecycle of feature implementations for MMOs. It’s sort of a given that MMO players tend to be familiar with other MMOs, so word naturally spreads when one MMO creates a cool new system. And other MMO devs are able to basically see that other game implementing it as a feature test, to gauge how popular it may be in their own game. So when one MMO adds a cool new system, the other MMOs typically do the same relatively quickly. They’re all just copying each others’ homework.

The shrines were a giant sticking point for me, because they totally missed the purpose of dungeons in previous Zelda games. I was a big fan of the “puzzle box” style dungeons in previous games, where changes you make in one room can affect things across the entire dungeon. And the shrines completely erased that, by being totally separate entities.

And sure, you could argue that the divine beasts were puzzle boxes, but that actually brings up my second complaint; All of the previous Zelda dungeons felt different. The forest temple felt dark and gloomy, like you were lost in a forest. The water temple was obviously made by the Zora and had distinct architecture. In BOTW, every single divine beast had the exact same architecture, the exact same theme, the exact same enemies. They didn’t feel like products of their environment, which made them feel very sterile.

Debatable. It is an incredible piece of FOSS, but whether or not it’s better than Plex really depends on your use case. Plex is much better for remote access and the “wife factor”.

The initial goal of a self-hosted video platform must be encouraging adoption. And you have to follow a “the customer is always right” (the actual meaning, not the bastardized Karen-screaming-at-customer-service version) mentality in regards to this; Even if you have the best Jellyfin server in the world, it’s ultimately worthless if your friends and family refuse to use it. Your service needs to be accessible to the average user, and the unfortunate reality is that the average user doesn’t even know what a port number or IP address is. When trying to encourage adoption, you’re facing a lot of social inertia in regards to people simply going “eh, I know Netflix isn’t perfect, but it already works.” You need to provide a service that is superior to other platforms in some meaningful way. And simply being free isn’t enough value for some people, because individuals will weigh the cost differently depending upon how heavily they factor it into the Cost:Convenience ratio that they’re willing to tolerate.

And this is where the wife factor comes into play: Is your spouse/partner going to be willing to use it? Does it provide enough convenience that they’ll be willing to ditch the streaming services? Now how about your extended family? And if you’re only ever planning on watching at home on LAN, Jellyfin may be perfect. But Plex’s unified login experience is much easier for the average user to understand. I can walk my mother-in-law through the account creation and login process over the phone, because it’s familiar. If she can figure out how to make a Netflix or Hulu account, she can figure out how to make a Plex account. You simply sign in, and your available libraries show up. Easy.

But Jellyfin will never be able to provide a unified login experience, because the entire platform is built to rebel against that; A unified login would require a centralized authentication server like Plex runs, and that’s specifically what Jellyfin is designed against. If I tried to get my MIL to use Jellyfin, her eyes would glaze over as soon as I mentioned updating her router to one that can run Tailscale, or using my custom domain. But with Plex, she simply logs in and has access.

Luckily, you can run both side-by-side. Personally, I prefer Jellyfin’s UI, so I use it at home. But I don’t let it touch the WAN (for a variety of reasons), and that’s where Plex comes in.

Yup, odometers were regulated specifically to protect consumers from widespread odometer fraud. It’s a little bit of a misnomer. They had tripcodes, which functioned similarly to usernames. It’s basically a password (called a tripcode) that you include when making your comment, and the site does a hash on it. The result of that hash appears as your name. Reversing the hash is computationally difficult, so the only way for another user to steal your “name” is to guess the tripcode you used. So you can essentially “sign” your comments with a username by using your tripcode.

And since reversing the hash is computationally difficult, you know that users with interesting usernames likely devoted a LOT of time into figuring out the tripcode they needed to use. That’s part of why the whole “Musk was on 4chan talking about being a god” thing is so funny. All of the posts had the username “The Antichrist” and the tripcode for it likely took several months to crack; Cracking the letters would be difficult, but doing so with the capitalization likely took a lot longer. In case you weren’t aware, the vast majority of America is only one or two missed paychecks away from homelessness, and enacting real change would require a massive effort (and create a lot of new homeless people) because it’s not Europe where you can just roll up to the capitol building on a weekend trip. Imagine if you were in Naples, and had to travel all the way to Madrid to protest your own government. Now imagine you have zero funds for a plane or train ticket, and need to drive the entire way. It’s a ~20 hour drive, which you’d inevitably need to take over the course of several days.

That’s essentially a full work week for the round trip, and it’s less than many Americans would need to travel to get to DC. And you think they’d get paid time off work approved for that? No, they’d get fired for missing an entire week of work. And that’s assuming they’re even able to return to work afterwards; Hopefully they avoided getting maimed, crippled, and/or arrested by police during the protest.

If anything, the US is a giant monolith of poverty and struggling individuals, with a thin veneer of manufactured exceptionalism keeping it from completely unraveling. The only Americans able to exert international pressure are the billionaires who have been robbing the proletariat blind for decades, and the lawmakers who are in the billionaires’ pockets.
