Independents are really good in theory. Particularly for local representation, if you get a good one. But without a party platform and well developed policies you often don’t know what you are getting. Parties aren’t always a bad thing. The problem is the duopoly providing limiting choices.
Some of the independents are people who were too shitty even for Family First, PHON, Trump, Liberal Party so went solo. People need to do their research carefully.

It looks like it will be handled by third party verification services in Australia. You will likely provide some form of ID with age which is likely to be government id and the service will check it then inform the social media company you pass. The legislation doesn’t allow direct government involvement in running the verification service and the verification companies have to conform to privacy laws.
It is certainly a flawed system. If kids want to access things they will and there is potential for abuse. However when considering harm mitigation you need to look at the whole population.
A lot of the more extreme libertarian views on the Internet originate in the US where their “freedoms” of speech and firearms have obviously just been a distraction while they were robbed blind. They couldn’t even protect their school kids from mass shootings because they put ideology and theoretical bullshit ahead of morality, empathy and the survival of their families. I used to buy into the Internet libertarian stuff in a huge way in the days of IRC and Usenet before the mega rich tech bros moved in and turned the Internet into a shitshow of scams, mass-surveillance and brain washing. Still a big proponent of free software and agree with a lot of stuff from the EFF but the oligarchs ruined it. Now I want to burn it down. Anything to keep these nonses away from our kids is good with me.
Just follow the money. Don’t even need to do that, its very obvious which industry group benefits from attacking the Greens. It is the same companies, majority foreign owned who aren’t paying their fair share of taxes.
It is hard to understand how anyone would fall for these corporate propaganda campaigns but then you think about the number of phone and internet scams and see all the fraud and weird cults around and I guess you just have to influence enough people to shift the goal posts. They must be spending a fortune per vote. Must be nice to have a licence to steal our countries wealth and not give anything back.
The idea in Australia is to place the responsibility on the social media companies.
The government isnt filtering traffic or enforcing behaviour. It is fining companies if they don’t implement a form of age verification that is compliant with privacy laws.
We can’t even make these companies pay tax and obey other laws so I am not very optimistic but at least it raises awareness of the problem.

If you were homosexual and were raised in an ancient Macedonian army or something perhaps you wouldn’t see a mother, sisters, daughters, lovers, work colleagues, neighbors, friends but who lives like that? Once that testosterone kicks in at puberty women aren’t generally a physical threat to men. I don’t really understand all the fear of them. Some women are really, really cool. Like serious friend material and lifelong partner stuff.
Need to seriously look at the taxes paid by companies with high foreign ownership, specifically American. News Corp. Tech companies. Mining companies. So much wealth being extracted from our country and so much foreign influence corrupting our politics with fuck all to show for it for the people who live here.

They are more expensive than high volume budget laptops but inline with other premium laptops. They aren’t unaffordable for working people in developed countries.
If I have another laptop die in rural Australia there is no local repair or replacement. Usually I take a gamble and buy the cheapest shit I can find, accepting it is disposable. I paid premium for the self repair and upgrade options and I will do again.

Our family does a reasonable amount of editing in kdenlive every week (youtube, education etc). A decade or so ago practically every video editor on linux felt incredibly unstable. I remember trying to work in Cinelerra. Now shit just works. There are a couple of things in the workflow that still need other tools but kdenlive has been fairly solid. It could do with some minor usability tweaks to make it friendlier to people coming from other editors and for beginners. Also I wish the gpu acceleration (movit) was stable enough to be enabled in MLT in kdenlive builds. Focussing on stability makes sense though.

Our voting system gives us the freedom to do that and it would be stupid not to take advantage of it. Voting for independent or minors is a good thing as long as you also preference the parties that will actually get elected sensibly. It is important to recognize that while the mining industry can buy just about anyone, there are plenty of important things for average people that the mining companies don’t give a shit about which can make a huge difference.
These industry groups are powerful, like drug cartels, the gambling industry or other organised crime. If some idealistic independent is voted in with a balance of power these guys can make them an offer too good to ignore. They can be set for life with a post political job. They can give jobs to family. They can fund campaigns. And that is all the stuff in public. Look at some of the shit they do overseas and its clearly an ethics free zone.

Unfortunately with the scale of money and influence from these mostly foreign owned companies state Labor governments are as compromised as the Libs when it comes to legislating on behalf of these companies, not just in WA. I think any political party is going to face the same problems and it really fucks with democracy. There are huge differences in policy between parties and voting should make a real difference. We have a pretty fair electoral system too. But its a joke if the industry can buy whoever is in government or kick them out. It is incredibly frustrating.

Trump supporters don’t know what a province or territory is. They have probably heard of states even if they can’t name many. Making Canada one state minimises the true size and strength of Canada to them. It only makes sense when you consider the audience.
Many men and women are prone to being dominated and controlled by others. Their insecurities demand simple ideologies and a found family to stand by them. It makes them susceptible to manipulation.
Men have been targetted because fascism requires bullies to intimidate the people and maintain the power of the state. However woman also play an important role as informers, cheerleaders and domestic slaves. Remember it is subservience all the way down. Women might be subservient to their men but the men are all subservient to their leaders. Freedom of thought or action can not be tolerated.
The susceptible people exist. Networks exist to target then. Rich and powerful people exist. It’s inevitable that these things would come together. What isn’t inevitable is that the rest of us would welcome them in without resistance. That part is fucking weird.
I live in Australia and the local winery is owned by a Californian company that sends all their output exclusively to the US domestic market. It would be such a shame if those US companies fucked off and profits went back into the local economy.
