Because he is so damned competent. A true leader that cares about his crew, and who respects life and people. He’s a student of history, an amateur archeologist, and he has his own damn saddle.
Because Sir Patrick Stewart is one of the most handsome dudes to ever walk the planet, even today.
The character being a fairly assertive and confident leader without bravado or machismo helps. He’s smart, capable, kind when allowed to be.
Picard is a perfect example of everything star trek represents, in a way, and is definitely the epitome of what star fleet and the federation were supposed to be.
But, legit, I’m cis het, and if Patrick Stewart asked for a handy, I’d grab the lotion.
Yeaaah, you’re gonna need to re-evaluate that cis-het label, friend. I like and respect the guy too, but if some miracle turn of events ended with he and I in the same time and place and he asked me for that, I’d politely but firmly decline. And then maybe enquire if his wife knew about this.
I’d probably be more comfortable if she put him up to it, but it’d still be a no.
