What have the Romans ever done for us?

They have provided the lazy inspiration for countless hours of low effort BBC documentaries.

Walking Roman Roads with Dan Jones. About Roman roads in the England. I thought it might be a little interesting. First he didn’t walk it , he drove in a Range Rover, he said on account of the weather. He could have used a cart instead. 🙄 Then he visited every tiny museum along the way and looked at the easy stuff like swords.

Imagine how different it could have been. Dan could have suited up like a centurion with a 30 kg back pack and walked it like a Roman. Could have eaten Roman food. Talked about all the people of Roman times who used the roads, could have even “met” some re-enactors on the way to St Ives.

0.5 hobbits , he didn’t even meet up with a Druid wizard on the way to Wales, which he could have. ( caveat, I fell asleep for two episodes )

You’ll have to read Mary Beard’s books on ancient Rome for some well researched and written history

travellers tip, antique atlases are not good guides to modern cities

If I lay my head down on my desk I think I’d be asleep in less than a minute. I slept ok last night, but running outta juice now. No coffee today isnt helping. Lets see if this tea can help, there is a lot riding on its shoulders.

After about two months of holding out for op-shops to have a muffin tray, bowls and large jars at a reasonable price, I’ve bought them all at bigW for about half of what the salvos were asking. One place wanted $10 ea for large used Moccona jars, ffs. Used jars should be 50c imo.

Op Shops seem to have stupid pricing these days. They have so much stuff being donated that they dont always even accept donations, and then instead of putting reasonable prices on things to sell quickly they mark it up so much it’s often not worth buying.

it got popular, cant blame 'em for trying to make a buck. Can blame 'em for trying to make a buck on Kmart donations though. The anko shit was rough when it was brand new, certainly no better now.

I’ve been going to op shops all my life and I think they’ve finally lost my business. The clothes and kitchen ware cost more than new. Interesting items seem to be marked at their maximum ebay value, eg, the donkey kong hand held for $250!

the brotherhood have lost it, they are charging $30 for old jumpers with any label except kmart

and they have some weird idea that old means vintage and collectable ( it doesn’t )

savers might not be a huge charity but at least they are reasonable

I give away my moccona jars to neighbours in my courtyard, I just put them out in the common area, they are always gone in 10 minutes

Burwood East RSPCA Op Shop is still priced like most places used to be! Got my trench coat for $7. Basically everything ends up on the clearance rack eventually too.

Back into making a Surviving Mars colony. Saw on Reddit that someone found coordinates for an absolutely massive crater map, so I’m building my colony in there. No colonists yet, just my drones setting everything up first, but damn have I found a great place to build a habitation dome; right next to rare metals, a vista, and two water deposits. Got some sick breakthough tech as well.

School holidays. Took the kids to the zoo yesterday. Saw Nellie. Took some photos. Also, bought a 2024 Numbat calendar on clearance for the cute numbat photos in it for $2.

Warning: I may start randomly spamming cute numbat photos at the thread in the coming weeks.

Someone required a bath today due to a pootastrophe. He’s still little under all that floof. Wasn’t a fan of the hair-dryer but happy to have a sit in front of the fire. Thankful he is so placid, he didn’t enjoy the process but it was just some grumbles.

Using a stick on picture hook. Picture is only 2.5 kg. I’m nonetheless saying my prayers and hoping this stays up in the long term 🙏😂.

I have a big wooden framed painting/print handing up on a stick-on picture hook, must be a good 3-5kgs. And it’s been up the whole 4 years I’ve been here, no issues.

That said, at my previous place in the CBD I had it hanging up on the same sort of hook (different brand iirc), and it fell and smashed my partners widescreen monitor. We had only been together for a year and a bit, and we were in lockdown, I thought for sure he was gonna leave me haha.

I use the hooks from woolies, I forget the name. But yeah, 4 years and it’s fine

Honestly feel like it’s Russian roulette for these things. For at least a week I’ve put cushions on the floor under the frame so if it does fall something will soften the impact.

I’m in need of a good winter jacket puffer thing for office. Is it worth dropping ~450 on standard Melbourne uniform i.e. North Face Nuptse? 💀

I’ve seen a few of these things around, they’re a bit overkill for our mild winter in Perth. I had no idea they were so expensive, though! My youngest wants one - because fashion. I was looking at the Anaconda range, They were in the $60-$100 ballpark (for kids jackets - not sure if adults are the same).

With that kind of money I’d look at Patagonia as well. There’s a cheap Aldi and Macpac ones listed on ozbargain right now. My complaint about mine (macpac) is that it’s kind of short, I’d prefer a warm jacket that at least covers my bum / overlaps with my pants.

Would a 1000A jump starter be enough to start most cars?

The question is less about jumping my own car (it’s a 2L ICE), but more about, if a friend comes up to me or I see a random struggling with a dead battery, what are the chances 1000A is enough?

(don’t want to spend too much money lol)

I don’t own a jump starter, how often are you jumping your car?

Diesel needs more jump than petrol.

Gooloo brand was recommended by Project Farm on youtube.

The car manual should indicate power required to start the batter, possibly listed as battery size or cold cranking amps (CCA).

        Long time no see Dumblederp.

how often are you jumping your car?

        Never had to, thankfully.

But have jumped my wife’s friend once, and came across two scenarios requiring a jump this past month. I just helplessly watched a guy wait an hour for RACV to turn up lol.

Gooloo brand was recommended by Project Farm on youtube.

Will go check it out, thanks:)

Hey dude, I’ve long given up on Overwatch.

If you do get a jump pack, some have usb ports and will work as a big usb battery which is a nice extra feature.

Cold enough that even my colleagues were wearing a puffer jacket indoors. I chickened out and drove in rather than walking because my fingers damn near fell off just in the few minutes between car and office. But my body is definitely feeling the effects of being sedentary :/ I’m going to try and walk in tomorrow for sure.

There’s still a deluge of work coming through, but at least I’m not handling it solo - I can’t wait for my other colleague to be back after the school hols so I can palm off some other stuff, sit down and improve some of these processes before the can gets kicked even further down the road into the next universe.

Thinking of making some pulled pork-style jackfruit now, for lunch tomorrow. Off I go into a rabbit hole of recipes.
