The University of Pennsylvania will block transgender athletes from female sports teams and erase the records set by swimmer Lia Thomas as part of an agreement with the federal government, the Department of Education said.
Thomas has not commented publicly on the latest lawsuit. Despite her expressed intention to keep swimming competitively after college, Thomas has been barred from international events by the rules of World Aquatics, which only qualify transgender athletes who have not experienced biological puberty.
Maybe I’m just really fucking jaded from a lifetime of garbage, but honestly, girl… You’re probably better off. Cis people fucking suck. In my experience most cis people, cis men especially, are extremely toxic, hateful and again, in my experience tend to wish trans people simply didn’t exist. To them we are inconvenient at best, offensive at worst, and a walking fetish at its ugliest. I tend to avoid hanging out with too many cis people IRL nowadays because it’s rare for me to encounter a cis person who is understanding and supportive.
Yeah, it sucks that the sport you love has decided to abandon you, but show yourself off to the people who will actually appreciate you. Don’t waste your time on people who will never care about you for who you are and will always hate you for the imperfections they perceive you as having.
Also this entire article was, unsurprisingly, very dysphoria-inducing. Not like there was a way the news could be presented in a way that wouldn’t induce dysphoria, but… for those of you who are cis and want to actually be more understanding, there’s a lot in this article that induces severe dysphoria; especially the highlighted section. Most of us don’t get the chance to go on puberty blockers before puberty, so the testosterone damages our bodies throughout highschool which can be a very traumatic experience.
A lot of us don’t get to start transitioning until later in life. I didn’t get to start until I was 30. The idea of people starting hrt the moment they go off to college and have some level of personal freedom is new. As such, the older the trans woman, the more masculine they’ll typically appear, regardless of how long they’ve been on hrt. I have a 20yr old friend who started hrt about a year after becoming an adult. She looks cis at this point. Meanwhile, I will likely never be confused for being a cis woman; I will likely always be seen as a trans woman, aka something lesser than a “”“real”“” woman in the eyes of a cis person.
Furthermore, a lot of us in the US will never get to have bottom surgery, breast augmentation, hip augmentation, facial feminization surgery, etc done due to the obscene cost; which further reinforces the cis bigotry of, “oh, but you’re not a real woman because you don’t have a vagina, or wide hips, or are just generally not feminine enough. You’re not trying hard enough so you’re not a real woman”.
Forgive my anger, I’m extremely jaded and cynical at this point. I do not have very many cis people in my life who are willing to accept me for who I am but instead want to shove me back into the “man box”. I cherish the ones who seem to see me as being fully woman, regardless of my masculine traits; but most cis people don’t. Most cis people see me as a wannabe woman at best, or something distasteful and offensive at worst.
Cis people fucking suck. In my experience most cis people, cis men especially, are extremely toxic, hateful and again, in my experience
Replace “cis” with black, or gay, or any other human descriptive to see how fucked up what you just said really is.
Your in my experience tag isn’t softening your hate - “I’m just saying that in my experience black men are toxic.” - see how that sounds? That’s how you sound to everyone else.
Realize that you’re being just as hateful as the shitty individuals who hate you for what you are, and choose something better.
Trans person: “Cis people suck, they keep passing laws and push rhetoric that kills people like me. They are toxic and hateful.”
Some random cis person: “tHaTs HaTeFuL yOu HyPoCrItE”
In my experience, cis people are the only ones erasing us and trying to pass laws and rhetoric that kills us. Sorry it’s not easy to “nuance” a voice of frustration around that. Cis people honestly kinda suck. Looking forward to another tone police reply.
And it’s Isreali’s who are genociding Palestinians, Russians who are invading and killing Ukrainians, and Chinese that are genociding Uighurs, but it’s ignorant and hateful to make blatant statements like “Israeli/Russian/Chinese people fucking suck,” as any fully-formed person understands that having no control over a group you were born to does not indict you for the crimes of the very worst of that group.
So if Ukrainians said that Russians suck, are you gonna jump in to defend Russians?
What if Palestinians said that Israeli people suck, are you going to chide them?
If so, then you just want those suffering to suffer quietly, or to suffer “the right way”. God forbid they express disdain for the groups oppressing them.
I think a better question is, do YOU think that Israeli/Russian/Chinese people fucking suck, or do you only hate entire groups of people when it directly affects you?
Hating an entire group of people <> “suffering the right way”
I hope you becomes less of a hateful person. I’ll leave you to it and hope our interaction inspires others to be less hateful and ignorant than you seem determined to maintain.
People should be held accountable for their choices and actions. Nobody chose to be born in any country, as a particular race, gender, or any other “group” outside of their control.
Perpetuating the acceptance of prejudice, however, is a choice.
The fact that the University of Pennsylvania swimmer soared from a mid-500s ranking (554th in the 200 freestyle; all divisions) in men’s competition to one of the top-ranked swimmers in women’s competition tells the story
In the 100 freestyle, Thomas’ best time prior to her transition was 47.15. At the NCAA Championships, she posted a prelims time in the event of 47.37. That time reflects minimal mitigation of her male-puberty advantage.
During the last season Thomas competed as a member of the Penn men’s team, which was 2018-19, she ranked 554th in the 200 freestyle, 65th in the 500 freestyle and 32nd in the 1650 freestyle. As her career at Penn wrapped, she moved to fifth, first and eighth in those respective events on the women’s deck.
Removing the records set while competing in women’s events seems justified in this case.
