Mixed starter incl. seaweed, veggie spring rolls, prawn toast

    Main: Singapore Fried Noodles

    Crispy Shredded Chilli Beef

My main used to be Kung Po Chicken, but it turns out it was only delicious from one particular Chinese takeaway. Usually it’s meh, occasionally ‘quite good’, but has never matched the recipe I fell in love with.

If YOU were the Chef at Peking Express in Brighton between about 2001-2007, PLEASE get in touch. I’ll PAY you for that dang recipe.

I’m veggie so it’s tofu for me. I typically go for whatever dish has a fuckload of ginger or cashew nuts. Have it with boiled rice

    • Sweet & Sour Pork

    • Orange/Lemon chicken (depending on the place and what they have)

    • Chow mein

    • Fried rice

    • Egg rolls

    • Egg drop soup

At the place I go to most often, I can get all of that for about $8 and it’s enough for two meals.

$8? That’s about £6. Lucky to find a Chinese in my area where the chow mein is below £7. Maybe it’s just my area being expensive but that’s really cheap.

Just checked a local chippie and chow mein would be £8 with fancy ones running to £8.40. That feels like a lot but prices have jumped up recently. I checked on Just Eat and the cheapest I could find was £7.60.

I suppose we now know why no-one ever cooks on American sitcoms.

        • I should point out that this is not really the norm. It’s just this one place, and the place is a bit of a hole in the wall and does not have table service. But it’s also not much of a secret because it’s always packed.

Cripsy chilli shredded beef in sweet & sour sauce

    Egg Fried rice

    Chips

    Curry sauce

It’s incredibly difficult to find a chinese that does a nice crispy shredded beef though; usually they end up being soggy rather than crispy and not chilli enough. The only really decent one I’ve had was down in Treforest, near Pontypridd in South Wales, and that was some years ago now.
