Them trying to buy Judges indicates that Judiciary still holds power in the US at least to some extent
Get f*+ked fElon!
PROSECUTE ELON MUSK FOR ELECTION INTERFERENCE, WISCONSIN!
In a fair world he would be rotting in prison or hung and stripped of all his wealth for such treacherous acts.
Hanged is the proper term for the past tense or inflictive action. Hung is present tense and is an action that one does.
Fucking awesome. And honestly, I’d take Austin Powers’ Dr. Evil—bald cat and all—over the real-life 2025 Nazi Dr. Evil any day. Wild that that’s now a perfectly reasonable stance.

Yeah, no. Musk let his ego get in the way. He forgot how unpopular he personally was, so his dramatic publicity stunts did more harm than good.
If Musk had done the normal, not ego driven, billionaire thing, and used his $25 million to secretly fund “grassroots” conservative groups, swamping the Wisconsin media with advertisements from two dozen different sources and hundreds of “ordinary citizens”, his side could easily have won. Creating the illusion that the conservative candidate was already well ahead would have boosted conservative turnout while convincing liberals and moderates to stay home and not waste their time voting. It’s happened in elections all over the country for decades.
Instead, Musk made the whole election about him. He didn’t just buy votes, he boasted about buying votes. He acted like a fucking celebrity. So people who don’t give a shit about the Wisconsin Supreme Court turned out to vote against Musk.
Musk’s money would have guaranteed the election. If he wasn’t an idiot. But as stupid and obedient and wealth-worshiping as the American voter is, they still have a tiny fragment of self-respect left for now.

This needs crossposting in uplifting news.
Especially when the rest of lemmy is particularly dreary
Elon to start handing out “winner” cheques only after his favourite wins next time. Or he’ll be offering 5mil cheques for the next one he wants elected. The man isn’t short of money, these amounts are rounding errors for him.
The 25 mil is a rounding error.
The cheques went to specific pre-selected supporter-workers (Lemmy told me), they had to be paid either way.
Beautiful
Wealthiest and vilest person on earth.
He has some pretty stiff competition in the “vilest” category. I propose they all fight to the death for the title.
Holy fuck i actually sighed relief
I was afraid to even look at the news. I hope this leads to even one small, tiny good outcome because it’s looking baaaad for all of us.
THANK YOU WISCONSINN!!!
-bonus if you remember drew Carrie
Drew Carey*, but “Hello Wisconsin!” Is the last line of “That '70s Show’s” Intro.
The Drew Carey Show was set in Cleveland, Ohio.
Noooo im getting ooooold. thanks for the correction.
We all are. At least we are on the correct side of the dirt. :)
I need to go rewatch the Martin show before I completely forget the 90s
‘Daaaamn, Gina.’
The mere mention of that show brings me back to high school and I hear “What up??”
For now
Specially, the suburb of Cleveland Rocks
‘Cleveland Rocks’ by the lovable goofballs The Presidents of the United States of America.
please someone have a still frame of him jumping like a dipshit in that cheese hat.
fucking troglodyte.
You owe me money for therapy
It’s like a jagged black symbol cut from the flag.
The cringiest cringe that ever cringed.
Good on Wisconsin. Now do the rest.
Trump has this to say:
VOTER I.D. JUST APPROVED IN WISCONSIN ELECTION. Democrats fought hard against this, presumably so they can CHEAT. This is a BIG WIN FOR REPUBLICANS, MAYBE THE BIGGEST WIN OF THE NIGHT. IT SHOULD ALLOW US TO WIN WISCONSIN, LIKE I JUST DID IN THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION, FOR MANY YEARS TO COME!
Sounds like Trump has plans to make sure people like Susan Crawford don’t get elected in the future.
Voter ID laws shouldn’t be controversial, they are enacted in most democracies.
Maybe you don’t remember because you didn’t speak English yet, but this is something that we figured out like 20 years ago.
Do like 5 minutes of actual research.
What are you talking about?
I think my comment was very clear.
There’s a shit ton of information on Voter ID laws, most of it from like a decade ago when Republicans themselves were openly admitting that they were pushing it in order to disenfranchise “certain groups”.
It’s just so fucking dumb that, in 2025, people are pretending to not know the purpose of these laws.
Both true and not true.
The idea that you have to register to vote is not normal in most democracies.
For example, in the Netherlands you have to carry ID at all times, whether you are voting or just going for a walk. You don’t have to register to vote, you just get mail a while before the election with a paper that you take to the voting booth, which is usually a few minutes walk away.
Such a system prevents fraud (which is already a non-issue in the USA, even with its confusing and difficult system), and also makes it easy for as many people to vote.
The goal of voter ID laws is to provide ways to disenfranchise people, by making things slightly harder and create plausible points to not count some ballots.
in the Netherlands you have to carry ID at all times, whether you are voting or just going for a walk
That’s pretty disgusting. Are you sure though? Some Americans think this about America too. If true, why not just tattoo subtle ids on people or force facial/other recognition and fingerprinting and iris scanning on everyone. What age do you have to start carrying id?
I am quite sure. I was out with a friend and he got fined for not carrying ID. The legal requirement starts at 16.
Yeah that struck me, too. Sounds very weird to an American. Realistically, having an ID on your happens most of the time, but if I didn’t have to drive, I’d leave my wallet home and just carry my phone all the time.
You don’t even need a license on you to drive most places. You just need to be licensed. If you decide to id yourself they can just look your license up. My state has id on phone too though. You could see if yours does.
Here in Italy we have “electoral cards” which are issued once every so many years and get reissued when expired or when you move. You need that AND your ID to vote.
Nobody makes a fuss. Just have to be an adult and remember to check if you lost yours sometime before you have to vote. Seems like a good minimum requirement for voting, being able to hold on a piece of paper.
Including Wisconsin. It’s been the law for over a decade. This just put it in the construction, for some damn fool reason.
ETA: Interesting story. We had a whistleblower testify in court that the legislators who created the law intended for it to suppress voter turnout.
Hmm. Why would a .ml user support voter ID laws I wonder?
Surely, a leftist used to studying intricate theory and picking apart the layers of capitalist control to see the rot at its center would be able to see why voter ID laws are a problem. I have it under great authority that .ml is filled with such users. Can’t think of any possible reason why they’d be for it. None at all.
I have this user tagged.
They got me banned from ml for calling them out because they were saying, “you have to give Trump credit for brokering peace in Gaza” a couple of weeks back.
Why not?
The fact that Trump is saying out loud that voter ID laws would “allow them to win all future elections” should give you a clue as to why not.
Voter ID laws, at face value, are not the problem. The problem is that Republicans have made getting a valid ID damn near difficult in typically blue areas.
Not only that, there are simply no cases of voter fraud in the US where a voter ID would have stopped said fraud. Voter Fraud, as it happens, is so rare that the only really effective way to commit fraud is by ballot stuffing which, surprise surprise, Republicans have consistently been caught doing.
I don’t really care what Trump says. Most modern democracies have voter ID laws, that is the sensible thing to do. It is difficult to prove that voter fraud doesn’t happen, are you saying people just haven’t been caught? You shouldn’t be able to vote as someone else just because you know their name and their address.
Of course, we should also prevent ballot stuffing.
It’s a solution to a problem which doesn’t exist.
Implementing Republican voter suppression laws is not sensible.
Any obstruction to voting should be controversial.
Requiring identification is an obstruction to voting?
In my country i just get my vote-note in the mail. In America you now have to own a passport which most doesn’t, be a member of a party, which 90mil eligible voters aren’t, and hope that your boss has the same political views as you, so he lets you off work to go vote.
LOL that’s absolutely not true
Which part?
In America you now have to own a passport which most doesn’t, be a member of a party, which 90mil eligible voters aren’t, and hope that your boss has the same political views as you, so he lets you off work to go vote.
I’m pretty sure you can answer that one for yourself.
Right, it is not.
Then what’s the point?
It is! Some countries use a “permanent” ink to prevent voting twice, but yes, just let people vote.
Let’s imagine one person one vote, but without voter ID. Now, one person can be 10 people…IF that one person wants to set the record for “easiest voter fraud conviction ever.”
In-person election fraud isn’t a thing that statistically happens.
However, requiring an ID does SUPPRESS turnout in countries that are deporting so quickly they sometimes accidently deport their own citizens and can’t get them back (true story bro).
So you fixed a problem that doesn’t exist, but hurt poor and marginalized people. Sounds like a shitty idea.
Are you suggesting voter ID laws suppress turnout in most modern European democracies?
In a place as polarized and corrupt as the US, Voter ID is merely a tool to keep Red or Blue in power. Tomfoolery involving the invalidation of a side’s enemies’ IDs is near certain.
How much for a passport in the US? What’s the expiry time?
Are there any goverment workers left, that can issue them?
Bout $80 and a decade
Ut costs $165 and is valid for 10 years. Yes of course.
It disenfranchises many voters. I know several people who don’t have valid IDs. I was almost unable to to vote last November because my ID expired, and all my local DMVs were booked for many months. Had to set an appointment 3 months in the future at a DMV 50 miles away from me to get an ID just before the election.
I still can’t get my California ID because of how much the DMV is giving me the runaround. At this point, I just keep my WA ID and said fuck it.
In many cases you can renew an ID online or by mail; if you can’t, there’s always the option to just show up at the DMV, you don’t have to have an appointment.
And if you don’t have a home address then you don’t deserve to vote?
Remember when we decided to not let just land owners vote?
You deserve to vote despite not having a home address.
And voter ID laws make it so they cannot.
Your solution is to just spend an entire day at the DMV and hope you get seen so you don’t have to do it again the next day? In what world does that sound reasonable?
Most of the world actually.
Well I don’t have time in my life to spend an entire day at the DMV. And I don’t find that to be a reasonable expectation. So, not here.
I’ve had to pay late registration penalties due my vehicles before under the same circumstances. Walk in, 150 people in line, walk out.
Why don’t you renew your vehicle registration online or by mail?
The DMV (or secretary of state offices) I know won’t see you without an appointment.
Im actually suprised you dont have that.
It’s been part of WI state law for a while. Putting it in the state constitution makes it harder to repeal.
This is one of those things that needs some context. Lots of nations have ID requirements similar to this, and people from outside the United States are often confused as to why it’s a problem. The issue is that it’s a backdoor to voter disenfranchisement.
Not everyone drives, and therefore, doesn’t need a state-issued ID. But now you need one to vote. So you have to go to the DMV to get an ID that’s not a drivers license but functions the same way for ID purposes. Except the DMV is only open during working hours, has long lines, and the nearest one may not have public transportation going to it.
It’s often minorities who don’t have drivers licenses to begin with, and they tend to vote for Democrats.
In practice, there was never significant voter fraud at all. Not enough to change the outcome of any race. Even on the surface, it’s solving a non-problem.
Why would you need to go to the Department of Motor Vehicles for an ID though? For a driver’s license I can somewhat understand but that should be the extent of their responsibilities.
Over here you go to your local registration office which basically every town has? It’s the same office for registering where you live (which you are also legally required to do) - meaning there are more than enough of them around. For smaller towns they are usually located in town halls, larger cities have many of them spread around.
Honestly, you’d easily get significant adaption of IDs by just mandating them for everything. Want a bank account? Need an ID. Want to get a job? Need an ID. Want to get a driver’s license? Need an ID. Are you older than 16? Believe it or not, need an ID.
If (nearly) everyone has an ID, it cannot be used as means for voter disenfranchisment.
Why would you need to go to the Department of Motor Vehicles for an ID though?
Well, now you’re seeing the issue. You go to the DMV because that’s the only place allowed to give out state IDs. This is not an accident.
If (nearly) everyone has an ID, it cannot be used as means for voter disenfranchisment.
You’re forgetting that the entire point is to be disenfranchising. Yes, this is 100% fixable, and Republicans will fight to make sure it doesn’t get fixed.
What does this mean?
Isn’t the election finished?
What does he mean “it should allow us to win wisconsin”
The current election is done, but there will be more in the future. I believe he’s referring to those.
fascists always do what they say their enemies are doing
GOP - Gaslight. Obstruct. Project
Just 10 years ago people would’ve called any politician who said moronic stuff like this a sore loser. And every non-expert would see that he is actually talking about cheating himself. What happened? The sanewashing needs to stop.
Sounds like Trump has plans to make sure people like Susan Crawford don’t get elected in the future.
It’s one of their stated goals. They’ve been against making voting easier fror the disenfranchised since day one. Day zero actually. Before that. For decades. Maybe close to a century now.
Longer than 10 years ago. He was first in office over 8 years ago.
Haha get fucked, Elon!
Immagine if Soros spent $25M on a candidate. Musk and the right would be furious, would be calling it “election interference by the deep state”
The right would argue he spends billions on every election. But it’s dark money. Elon has the balls to let people know where the money is coming from. Not all heroes wear capes. Some wear hair plugs and children as body armor.
We all really, really need to abandon the idea that pointing out hypocrisy and inconsistency does or means anything to anyone. Literally it’s all we do all day on the left, and all it does is signal to the orcs that they’re winning. As long as we’re outraged and pointing out this thing or that thing we’re angry about, they feel they’re winning.
They are simply not complex enough to care or internalize anything deeper about the notion of hypocrisy so it’s just a noise to them, and even to the larger liberal America broadly, they don’t know what’s real or not anymore and have totally tuned out the news. Foreign agents have been seeding both sides of every debate for so long, that average people who don’t follow every story just see both sides screaming the other is lying and go back to work. They vote for whoever social media tells them is good.
We need to redirect energy to telling a new story, about how the wealthy are taking our future, and abandon this endless, worthless parade of reactions. We are always on response, never proactive, never trying to change the story or get ahead of it, always screaming about this latest bad thing they did and focusing on it like they want. We can do a lot better broadly.
This, 100%. Fanning the flames of outrage only works on people who are already on your side.
Yes, they are lying hypocrites with no actual morals who are more than happy to lie directly to our face.
This isn’t news, stop being shocked by this.
The American right in general has no unified ideology or thought. It’s just a bunch of angry idiots.
Strong disagree; they have an ideology, it’s just one that people on the left find disgusting because we value equality and they value the polar opposite: heirarchy.
They’ve also captured the majority of State houses and all three branches of the federal government. They’re highly organized with a sophisticated political media that knows how to communicate with their target demographic.
They believe that societies are successful when the right people are empowered; it’s why the talking points against DEI work so well— they see it as a restructuring of heirarchy back to their proper order. It’s why they push for Christian & white Nationalism— they want the “right” people to rule. Every policy they push for is framed by this dynamic.
They have goals, vision, drive, plans, and power. What is that if not an ideology? If the left continues to underestimate the reactionary right, we will continue to fail.
Excellent point. I’m no political expert, but I can see that what we’re doing right now isn’t working. No matter how much we point out how awful the Right is, we aren’t winning voters because they aren’t really seeing it. For the person who thinks an immigrant took his job and is why he’s not getting ahead today, hearing that a bunch of them got loaded on a plane and taken to an El Salvadorian gulag isn’t a bad thing. It’s a good thing, because that’s fewer undesirables polluting the country and ‘taking our jerbs’. It also doesn’t affect them. Who cares if some brown dad from Maryland got sent to the gulag by accident. That’s somebody else’s problem. The people we’re trying to reach don’t care about that. If sending the Browns to a labour camp brings the price of eggs down, then well, too bad so sad, send 'em all off so Ah can get muh eggs ‘n’ gas for cheapah! Murica fuck yeah!
Let’s get real. All our bloviating about how dumb the GQP is and how evil they are serves once purpose – preaching to the choir. We keep insulting their intelligence, insisting they have no plan, saying we’re smarter than they are, and accusing their voters of being morons barely able to breathe on their own, but we keep losing elections to these supposed morons. Our leadership and our pundits have forgotten the most important role for leaders and pundits – convincing people that we’re right and the other side is wrong. Meanwhile, the GQP has cornered the information space, sent us reeling, gotten enough people to stay home, vote third party, or actually vote for their shitheads, and basically shock and awe us in 2016 AND 2024. Really, if you stop and look at how well we got outplayed, you gotta question who the real morons are. Doubly so now that they’re in power, and rather than stepping back and pointing out the resulting shitshow is 100% on Team Red, we’re helping them fuck the country over, repeatedly. That really fits us for the dunce cap in my book.
I hope that AOC and Sanders’ message sticks. I think it’s a good one. As billionaires get tax cuts while we pay more and more for essentials, the message that we’re being fucked by the moneyed class should stick harder. While it wasn’t enough to win us those two Florida seats (an awful lot of awful people still vote in Florida), it DID seem to reverse our fortunes in Wisconsin, and we managed to keep the courts liberal over there. But even this has its flaws. I think a lot of people have the idea that Democrats are just a party of talking, not of action. And that idea isn’t wholly unearned. Democrats do have a habit of throwing their hands up and giving up when the going gets tough. What they need to do is fire up Billy Ocean and rise to the occasion, fighting for all our rights and convincing through both words and actions that they are the better chance. We’ll never pick off the hard-core Q-Anon nutcases, but if we can convince some of the 7 million that didn’t vote for Trump in 2020 but did in 2024 to stay home or vote third party, if not vote for us, and we can get some of the 90m that stayed home in 2024 to turn out now for the Democrats, that’s good. Here’s hoping that Democrats put actions to the words we’re seeing right now, otherwise this will be short-lived. And all we’ll have is the ability to shake our fists at the evil, stupid Republicans.
It’s at least fair to point out that he didn’t donate $25M, but he did donate $2M. I’m half surprised that Musk or someone didn’t accuse Soros of buying the election with zero whiff of irony.
Especially from someone who is clearly very influential in the admin and is clearly so
